Common questions
Is this free?
Yes. MOT history is public information published by the DVSA. No account, no card, no trial.
What counts as a mileage discrepancy?
A reading at one test that's lower than a reading at an earlier one. It can mean the odometer has been wound back, though it can also be a keying error at the test centre. Either way it's worth asking about before you buy.
Why does this car have no history?
Cars in Great Britain usually need their first MOT three years after registration, so anything newer has nothing to show. Records generally begin in 2005.
Advisory or failure — what's the difference?
An advisory is something the tester noticed that didn't fail the test but will need attention. A major or dangerous defect fails it. Dangerous means the car shouldn't be driven until it's fixed.
Should I check before buying?
Always. Recurring advisories tell you what's been ignored, the failure pattern tells you how it's been looked after, and the mileage line tells you whether the story adds up — all before you've spent a Saturday driving to see it.
